Preserving the Taste of Summer
Tomato Canning Workshop Brings the North Baltimore Community Together
The Wood County Health Department’s Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) program recently hosted a hands-on workshop in partnership with the North Baltimore Community Garden Project. The Tomato Canning Workshop took place on September 18, 2025 at North Baltimore’s Village Park and drew residents from across the community to learn, connect and celebrate the season’s harvest. The North Baltimore Garden Club provided their expertise and lead the educational portion of the workshop making the event informative while staying connected to the community.
Participants learned how to safely preserve tomatoes through the canning process to help families enjoy the taste of summer all year long. Attendees learned step-by-step techniques for food preservation along with storage and safety tips from experienced facilitators. Each participant went home with jars of freshly canned tomatoes, a printed recipe guide and supplies to encourage continued food preservation at home.
The North Baltimore Community Garden, established through CHC efforts earlier this year, has become a vibrant gathering space where residents grow, harvest and share fresh produce. The garden not only increases access to healthy foods but also provides opportunities for education, physical activity and community connection.
“This workshop was a great example of how local partnerships can make healthy living fun and accessible,” said Safa Ibrahim, Program Coordinator for the Creating Healthy Communities grant. “It’s inspiring to see residents take pride in what they’ve grown and learn new ways to preserve it for their families.”
Through initiatives like the Tomato Canning Workshop, the CHC program continues to promote long-term health and wellness in Wood County communities by supporting access to nutritious foods, creating supportive environments, and fostering sustainable local partnerships.
