Crim Elementary Students Lead the Way in Anti-Vaping Advocacy
Wood County Health Department is thrilled to share an exciting project completed in collaboration with a local BG City School. In a meaningful display of youth engagement and creativity, all fourth and fifth grade students at Crim Elementary—108 students in total—participated in an Anti-Vaping Video Contest aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of vaping and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.
Students first learned about the risks of smoking and nicotine through an evidence-based curriculum presented by the Health Department. They then applied their knowledge to the production of original videos that reflected what they learned and how they wanted to communicate those messages to their peers.
The project not only promoted peer-to-peer advocacy but also empowered students to use their voices to make a difference. With the strong support and involvement of Crim’s dedicated teaching and administrative staff, the initiative became a collaborative effort that emphasized both education and creativity.
A total of 16 videos were submitted, each showcasing the students’ unique perspectives and thoughtful messaging. Judges selected a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner, and those students were honored with awards and prizes during the school’s award ceremony held on May 30.
The day before, on May 29, the WCHD and Crim Elementary hosted an educational and celebratory activity to recognize the hard work and commitment of all participating students while reinforcing the information they learned in the program. The event was a joyful culmination of weeks of effort and served as a reminder that youth-driven advocacy can be both impactful and inspiring.
This contest not only educated students on the risks of vaping but also gave them the tools to influence positive change among their peers—demonstrating the power of youth when given the opportunity to lead.
