Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

Breastfeeding Support

In alignment with the American Academy of Pediatrics , the Ohio Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth, with the addition of complementary foods, and continued breastfeeding for two years or longer, as mutually desired by mom and baby.

The WIC program commits to:

  • Helping make breastfeeding the cultural standard
  • Offering education to help families make informed feeding choices
  • Encouraging and supporting families to meet their infant feeding goals

WIC employs Breastfeeding Peer Helpers and Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) to work alongside women on their breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding Peer Helpers are WIC mothers with personal breastfeeding experience. They offer mother-to-mother encouragement and support to help families reach their personal breastfeeding goals. CLCs are also available to provide breastfeeding guidance and support and help navigate more complex lactation concerns. Our Peer can be contacted by text or call at 419-350-6195 with breastfeeding questions or concerns. Additionally, the Appalachian Breastfeeding Network has a 24 Hour Breastfeeding Support Hotline staffed by lactation professionals that can be reached any time of day at 1-888-588-3423.

Are you in need of a breast pump?
Most insurance plans cover breast pumps for expectant mothers, but each plan is slightly different. We recommend you start by checking with your insurance provider to find out what is covered before your baby arrives. If you are unable to get a pump through insurance or you don’t have insurance, you may be eligible to receive one through WIC. Reach out to us and our breastfeeding support staff can help determine which option is best for you!
